DCLI Programs
INTERNSHIPS AND UGI WORKFORCE
United for Greater Impact (UGI) Workforce Programs, an initiative of United Way, is designed to strengthen economic stability and prevent households from falling into the ALICE category—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. In Macon County, United For ALICE data consistently shows that more than 1 in 3 households are living at or below the ALICE threshold, meaning they are working but still unable to afford basic household necessities such as housing, childcare, transportation, and healthcare.
UGI focuses on proactive intervention through job readiness, career training, and upskilling opportunities that increase earning potential and long-term financial resilience. By connecting individuals and families to education, workforce development, and supportive services, UGI helps stabilize working households, reduce financial volatility, and prevent the downward cycle into poverty.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS
DCLI’s Health Professions programming was developed in response to community conversations and lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, which underscored both the need for a strong, diverse healthcare workforce and greater civic engagement in healthcare careers. In partnership with local leaders, DCLI offers a High School Health Professions Club, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, and Phlebotomy certification, along with hands-on learning through field trips and summer internships. These programs prepare students for meaningful careers while advancing DCLI’s ongoing commitment to health as a vital pathway to community leadership and service

Public Safety
The Jerry J. Dawson Civic Leadership Institute’s Public Safety programs promote understanding, trust, and civic engagement by exploring public safety as both a community responsibility and a career pathway. Through hands-on experiences, mentorship, and dialogue, participants gain insight into law enforcement, emergency response, fire protection, and the legal system while emphasizing the rule of law, personal responsibility, and social justice. The programs strengthen connections between communities and public safety professionals while preparing participants to become informed, engaged civic leaders.

ADULT PROGRAMS
DCLI supports adult programming not only to strengthen workforce outcomes, but also to educate and engage the broader community in ways that build long-term resilience and trust. In addition to workforce development programs like United for Greater Impact (UGI), DCLI offers community education programs that reflect DCLI’s broader commitment to serving adults through both workforce development and civic education—ensuring residents are not only economically supported, but also informed, engaged, and connected to the systems that shape their community.

AG Education
Agricultural education is an important focus of the Dawson Civic Leadership Institute because agriculture remains a vital part of the region’s economy, workforce, and future growth. Ag education goes far beyond farming — it introduces students and young leaders to careers in science, technology, business, sustainability, engineering, manufacturing, and food production.
The Dawson Civic Leadership Institute believes agricultural education creates pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and civic leadership while helping prepare the next generation to meet the challenges of a changing workforce and global economy.

College Scholars Program
Eligible students may apply for scholarships to in-state public colleges and universities to help cover tuition, books, and fees in select career-focused fields. The program provides academic and personal support through workshops and ongoing guidance, with an emphasis on reducing student debt and preparing participants for long-term success. Students must remain actively engaged and meet basic academic requirements. Applications are now open for the Spring 2026 semester.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
DCLI offers a wide range of enrichment programs that support youth and adult development through hands-on learning, leadership, wellness, and civic engagement. From sports camps and university-based academic experiences to identity-based leadership programs, agriculture and wellness initiatives, public policy exploration, and emerging technology camps, participants build confidence, skills, and real-world awareness. Together, these opportunities encourage curiosity, personal growth, healthy connections, and community involvement while exposing students to new interests, career pathways, and the impact they can have on the world around them.
